A Tingley couple and two of their friends have raised over £400 for Wakefield Hospice and Breast Cancer Care.
Catherine Walker and her husband David, along with Joyce Fountain and Anita Swinton raised the amount in just three hours by baking cakes and inviting their neighbours round for a cup of tea.
A £2 entrance fee was charged but many offered more, with around 60 people turning up over the course of the day to support. People from around the area have continued to donate weeks after the event, bringing the total to a staggering £420.
Both Mr and Mrs Walker have children from previous marriages who suffer from cancer, whilst Mr Walker’s first wife tragically died from the disease. Mrs Walker’s granddaughter Steph is thankfully recovering after contracting Hodgkinson’s lymphoma, aged just 12. Mrs Walker, 75, said: “Cancer is horrendous and it affects everybody. You don’t where it is going to go next. “But we had a great morning raising all this money and I couldn’t have done all of this without my friends and family who were so willing to support these two great charities and I sincerely thank everyone who attended.”
