STAFF and customers at pet centre mypetstop are bracing themselves for its possible closure by the end of the year.

Owners Mars Petcare has proposed shutting its centre at Capitol Park in Tingley due to “poor financial performance”.

The news quickly spread on Facebook last week where customers set up a group to protest and offer their support if a buyer or a new location can be found.

Leading the way was John Harrison who said: “The reaction has been overwhelming from a wide range of customers who live in the Leeds and Wakefield area.

“Closure would be devastating to us all. Trying to balance work along with pet care is challenging but this business is a god send and makes life easier.”

A Mars Petcare spokesperson said: “Mars Petcare owns three mypetstop Centres in Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle.

“We are proposing to close the mypetstop businesses in Leeds and Manchester as a result of the negative financial performance of the business over the past eight years, despite the best effort of the management team and all mypetstop associates.

“At the moment, we are in consultation with mypetstop staff and once this period is complete we will update customers on the outcome and be able to comment further.”

The centre which opened in 2004 offers a range of services including boarding facilities, day care, grooming, dog training classes, canine hydrotheraphy and a shop. Between 20 and 30 people are employed there.

During the Olympics they received international coverage when pictures were broadcast of Nicola Adams’s pet dog watching her box her way to a gold medal.

The gold medal winning Leeds boxer had put her Doberman Dexter into their kennels and paid for him to have a television so he could watch her fight.

Mypetstop remains open but customers with future bookings that may be affected have been advised to contact the centre for more information.
