THERE are not many eating establishments that can boast hundreds of people at their grand opening, but then again, not many can boast an appearance by The Stig.

The expert driver and faceless star of the BBC’s Top Gear helped launch Luppy’s Diner, a pizza and American-style diner on Queen Street on Saturday.

The diner is owned by two brothers, Mark and Chris Lupton, who are hoping to make it a magnet for car enthusiasts of all kinds.

Having opened Luppy’s at the start of the month, they decided a grand opening with the Mayor of Morley, Coun Andy Dalton, The Stig and a parade of a dozen American cars was a good way to announce they were open for business.

A poor weather forecast meant the event was not as big as they had hoped but Mark said they had had a good day anyway, with a “few hundred people” dropping by over the course of the afternoon.

He added: “The mayor gave a fantastic speech and The Stig told me afterwards that people were so friendly, he loved it. People old and young came to speak to him and he had a really good day as well.”

A couple of children came by with Christmas cards for The Stig but just missed him – but Mark made sure he got the cards and said he was waiting for them to return to the diner so he can give them a photograph of The Stig with their cards.

He added that the mayor had been extremely supportive, saying the diner was a great thing for Morley, and Leeds City Council had also been, “fantastic”, giving them permission to bring cars into the pedestrian precinct.

A video from the day can now be seen on the Luppy’s Diner Facebook page where they will also publish plans for further car events in the new year.
