Town stalwart dies, 65

FORMER deputy Mayor of Morley Stuart Welham has died suddenly in hospital aged 65.

Born in Dewsbury in July 1945, Mr Welham worked as a local government officer for Morley Corporation, Bradford and Wakefield councils throughout the 1960s and became a Labour councillor in the 1970s.

He was a member of Morley Borough Council and of Leeds City Council, although his loyalty was always to Morley.

Over the years he served as a school governor at the three Morley high schools and was chair of governors at Morley High School from 1980 to 1982.

He was always concerned with road safety and was chairman of Morley Road Safety Committee and later became chairman of the Highways Committee.

He was Deputy Mayor of Morley in 2001/2 and a reporter for the Morley Advertiser from 1985 to 2005.

He leaves a widow, Margaret.

Mr Welham’s funeral will be held at St Peter’s Church, Morley, at 11am on Thursday, March 17, followed by cremation at Cottingley Hall Crematorium.
