WORKERS from Wates Construction took a day off from their usual jobs to help create an outdoor classroom at Bruntcliffe School.

Office staff from the firm that has a base on Gelderd Road spent a busy day creating a sensory garden for pupils with special educational needs.

Over the course of a day an unloved area of grass and weeds was transformed.

Joined by a team from civil engineers Moortown Group, Wates staff built raised flowerbeds and vegetable patches, installed a chalkboard and picnic benches, painted garden railings, replaced patio slabs and weeded the existing flowerbeds.

Headteacher Heather Scott said: “It was fantastic to see so many Wates colleagues working hard with and for our young people.

“The end result is truly transformational and will improve our students’ experiences every single day. Thank you, Wates - you are brilliant.”

David Price, business unit director for Wates Construction in Yorkshire, said: “It has been a real pleasure for the team to volunteer time and lend our services on our annual community day.

“I’d like to thank all involved for their hard work in what is a fantastic example of a local business making a positive difference.”

The project was organised as part of the company’s annual community day that sees 2,600 employees across the country donate a day of their time to make a difference to the communities in which they are working.

It also celebrated the firm’s continuing collaboration with the school under the Business in the Community Scheme.

Business in the Community is one of Prince Charles’s charities and encourages businesses to give a bit back by forging links with local schools.

Pupils at the school are now hoping for some better weather that will allow them to enjoy their new classroom and relaxation area.
