WORK has started on a new pedestrian crossing on Dewsbury Road.

Work on the crossing, close to Syke Road and Rein Road, was due to begin on Tuesday and should take about eight weeks.

Councillors who have long campaigned for a crossing on the busy road have welcomed the action.

Coun Shirley Varley said “We have been campaigning for several years for this crossing to be introduced to make crossing the Dewsbury Road safer for local schoolchildren and residents.

This crossing will make the trip to Woodkirk Academy a lot safer for students but will also mean many residents, especially pensioners and the disabled, can cross this busy road quicker and safer.”
