Young artists have made their very own masterpiece – albeit in several pieces.

Shoppers at the White Rose Centre were invited to represent West Yorkshire as part of the BBC’s Big Art event roadshow.

The event was held to help celebrate the launch of the BBC’s new Your Paintings website, which aims to show the entire UK national collection of oil paintings, the stories behind the paintings, and where to see them for real.

It is made up of paintings from thousands of museums and other public institutions around the country, including plenty from Yorkshire.

On Thursday shoppers at the White Rose were asked to recreate a small part of an impressionist painting which was selected from the Bradford 1 Gallery.

The painting was split into 60 pieces with art enthusiasts invited to paint their own individual piece of canvas.

Once all 60 canvas paintings are completed they will be joined together to recreate a new version of the famous masterpiece, which will be displayed in the mall for shoppers to view.

Richard Bowler, centre director at White Rose, said: “We are so excited that White Rose has been selected to represent West Yorkshire for the Big Art event. This is a fantastic opportunity for any local artists to showcase their talent and work together with the local community to raise awareness of art from the region.

“We’re proud to be able to offer Bradford 1 Gallery a platform where they can show to the public its beautiful selection of works.

“There’s no doubt the event will be a huge hit and I hope our shoppers will enjoy the display as much as we do.”

Your Paintings, which is live online now, is a BBC website which showcases the entire UK national collection of more than 210,000 oil paintings in one place online for the very first time.

A lot of the images are publicly owned artworks and are usually kept behind closed doors so The Big Art event is a chance for the general public from across the nation to view masterpieces they would usually never get the chance to see.

Saul Nassé, controller of BBC Learning, said: “The idea that we could put on virtual display all the UK’s paintings was madly ambitious, but thanks to a brilliant partnership with the PCF (Public Catalogue Foundation), we’ve realised that ambition.

“Your Paintings is a thing of beauty and I’m hoping the events that we’re rolling out right across the country are going to inspire thousands more people to learn about these wonderful paintings.”White
