A teenager from Tingley was crowned winner of Countdown after a triumphant performance in the final conundrum.

Callum Todd, 18, won the Channel 4 game show just before Christmas after battling through the rounds, which were filmed inside the ITV Studios at Media City UK in Salford.

The puzzle master, a sixth form pupil at Woodkirk Academy, said; “I went to the studio, hoping to win one game but I ended up winning seven.”

Callum said that he didn’t think he had the “slightest chance” of getting through to the grand final.

But the modest student not only managed to get through to the final round, but he scooped the top prize in a nail-biting finale.

Callum was challenged with the conundrum, ‘IHURTPALM,’ which he solved in 4.5 seconds, beating his competitor 126–116, with the word ‘Triumphal’.

The youngster, who lives on Redhill Crescent, said that it was hard to practice for such a show.

“It’s more of a knack,” said Callum, who decided to enter while watching the show on TV at his Tingley home.

A spokeswoman from Woodkirk Academy said that their “fantastic” pupil had 100 per cent attendance and the staff were watching Channel 4 each time he was on.

“He did incredibly well, we’re really proud of him,” she said.

Callum is now applying for a place at university and has no set aspirations as yet. He said; “I just take each day as it comes.”
