One day you’re teaching long division in a secondary school, the next you’re playing in an international football match against the world champions.

That’s the dream-like fate awaiting Morley Academy teacher Adam Priestley, who will star for Gibraltar in their European Championship qualifying match against Germany tomorrow night (Friday).

The Farsley Celtic striker, who spends his weekdays teaching various subjects at the school, will line up against stars such as Philipp Lahn, Mario Götze and Thomas Müller in Nuremberg tomorrow night and is unsurprisingly buzzing at the prospect.

He said: “It is crazy we will be gracing the pitch against those calibre of players.

“Without a doubt, it was the game that stuck out when the draw was made. At the time, they weren’t world champions and now they are and it makes it an even bigger game.

“It is not every day you get to play against the world champions, so it will be an amazing experience – no matter what the result is.

“To play against the calibre of players as Germany and say I have played against the world champions would be something I never personally thought I’d do.”

24 year-old Priestley qualifies to play for Gibraltar through virtue of being born in the territory while his dad served in the Air Force.

He made his debut last year after the island was granted permission to compete in the European Championships, though they are yet to be ratified by FIFA meaning they cannot contest the World Cup for the timebeing.

And though the fledgling football team have found the net on three occasion in friendly matches, they are yet to hit the target in a competitive game, something Priestley is keen to change himself.

“Scoring that first competitive goal is an accolade I think a few of the players would like; myself being one of them,” he added.

“We have had a few chances and scored one against Georgia and we still can’t understand why it was ruled out.”

Although he would disagree with verdict of the many who believe the result is a foregone conclusion, one thing is certain: he’ll be the coolest teacher in school on Monday morning.
