Morley Cricket Club is planning a number of special events to celebrate its 125th year.
Formed in July 1889, the club has been the focal point of the town for cricketers and their families throughout ever since.
The club currently runs three senior teams and junior sides at the under nine, 11, 13, 15 and 17 age groups but it also tries to stay at the centre of the Morley community with its activities and support for other key organisations in the town.
In its special year, the club is organising numerous events, the first being at Morley Town Hall on Friday, February 21. It’s organising a Night with Frank and Dean, involving local singers Phil Fryer and Alan Beck, supported by the Vegas Girls.
Club president David Dowse said: “It promises to be a great night and a fitting way to kick-start the 125th celebrations.”
Tickets, priced at £12.50, are available now from the club or from Cucina Bar and Restaurant or Althams Travel Agency, both in Queen Street.
Later in the year the club will be organising its second annual Morley Beer Festival from April 4-6 and will be one of the post parade assembly points for the Morley St George’s Day Parade on Sunday, April 27.
Then in August, it will again be staging WicketFest, the fast-growing music festival where local bands can showcase their talents. It will also be holding its annual bonfire night celebrations towards the end of 2014.
In the meantime, however, Mr Dowse the club was focusing on its 125th anniversary celebrations and has other events pencilled-in for the summer.
“In particular, the club would like to hear from any former players, committee members or voluntary helpers - the aim is to arrange an event in 2014 when the achievements of people from the club’s history can be marked and celebrated,” he said.
Anyone who would like to re-establish their links with the club are asked to e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or telephone 0113 2534702. People can leave their contact details and someone from the club will get back in touch.
Mr Dowse said: “The club is hoping 2014 will be a hugely successful year on all fronts and we look forward to the support of old, current and new supporters.
“Please get in touch if you would like to join in the celebrations because you can be assured of a warm welcome.”
