Five local charities have been given a cash boost from a building society branch of Morley.

The groups have each been given a share of £150,000 from the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation, to mark annual Make a Difference Week and to celebrate Yorkshire Building Society’s 150th birthday.

The donations formed part of a nationwide scheme which saw the bank, which has its Morley headquarters based on Queen Street, call on members of the public to nominate charities deserving of the money.

Thanks to nominations from residents in Morley, Evie’s Shooting Star, Morley Amateur Operatic Society, Martin House Children’s Hospice, the Charlie Mortimer Fund and Phoenix Dance Group Morley have all received financial help.

Peter Jowett, manager of the Morley branch of Yorkshire Building Society, said: “Our annual Make a Difference campaign is always very popular, but this year we’ve been able to support more charities than ever before thanks to the Charitable Foundation’s generous donation to mark the Society’s 150th anniversary.

“I am delighted that five worthwhile causes in our area are part of the hundreds of local charities the society is supporting throughout the UK and I am sure that the money will be used to make a very positive difference in our community.”
