A new church service is offering a space for three Churwell congregations which saw their place of worship close.

A weekly 10.30am service on Sundays at Stanhope Hall Churwell Community Centre for former attendees of All Saints, St Brigid and Back Green Methodist churches has been successfully going ahead since the end of September last year.

Coun Joyce Sanders said that Church of England, Roman Catholic and Methodist members have come together and enjoyed a “relaxed and lovely atmosphere.”

The three institutions were known as Churwell Churches in the Community and they all now operate under the banner of the new community centre services.

The three former churches were all closed by their their diocese, according to Coun Sanders, who attends the Stanhope Hall services.

In previous years they have got together at least three times a year for community events.

Coun Sanders said that new members are welcome to join them at the Elland Road hall on Sundays.

Different speakers appear each week during the services.
