A doctor has retiring after a 40-year-long career in medicine.

GP Chris Houghton, who lives in West Ardsley, has tended to patients at Kirkgate Surgery in Birstall for 20 years.

Dr Houghton, 64, said: “I will definitely miss the surgery, it has been a big part of my life for 20 years.

“I am sorry to leave but I would like to thank all my staff over the years, it’s been a privilege to work with them.”

The surgery’s staff organised a retirement party for Dr Houghton, at Healds Hall Hotel in Liversedge, where he was presented with a trinket box.

After moving to Birstall in 1981, he started the Kirkgate practice.

However, after using three different premises as the surgery’s base, Dr Houghton applied to a government scheme to build a new purpose-built practice.

Dr Houghton, who lives in West Ardsley, said: “The plan to build the surgery is probably one of my greatest achievements.

“It took five years but it was well worth it.”
