Wetherspoon are asking Morley people to help them find a suitable name for the new £1m pub it has planned for the town centre.
The pub chain has confirmed it is in the process of buying the former Blockbuster store in Queen Street and is now asking people to put forward any ideas they have on what it should be called.
Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said: “We are keen to get readers involved in the naming of the pub and would welcome suggestions. “Our criteria is that we name our pubs after an individual or place relating to the town’s history or relating to the former use of the building itself.
“We look forward to seeing the suggestions and choosing a name for the pub from them.”
Morley Cricket Club has already come up with their suggestion – the Bobby Peel.
Club chairman Simon Barraclough said: “The new Wetherspoons would be an ideal opportunity to push for recognition of one of the finest English all rounders the game has ever produced.
“Wetherspoons has a reputation for coming up with highly original names for its pubs and naming this exciting new venture for the town in recognition of one of the area’s greatest every sportsman sounds ideal to me. The fact that he remained heavily involved with the local clubs in to his 60s and also helped reform the rugby club in the town is testament to the loyalty of the guy.
“I would love to think that in the not too distant future we’d be having a pint in the Bobby Peel.”
Other suggestions so far have included cycling legend Beryl Burton (pictured left).
