A junior rugby gala will go ahead as planned after travellers were moved on.

Around 300 junior players from across Yorkshire, Humberside and Lancashire are expected to take part in Shaw Cross Sharks gala on Saturday at the club’s Leeds Road pitches.

But travellers set up camp on the pitches.

And organisers thought they would have to move to a new venue for the rugby gala.

However West Yorkshire Police and Kirklees Council have issued the travellers with a notice order to leave the site tonight (Friday).

Junior Club Secretary Alan Smith says the gala will now go ahead as originally planned.

“The club would like to say a big thank you to both the police and the council for the action they have taken.

“And to everyone who has rallied around to make sure the gala can go ahead.
“The gala is back on at Shaw Cross.”

The gala takes place from 10.30am at Sharky Park , on Leeds Road, Dewsbury.

As well as the rugby there will be stalls and Super League stars will be turning up for the fun family day.
