Gardening equipment and power tools worth hundreds of pounds have been stolen from a storage centre by thieves.

Churwell Environmental Volunteers reported that their ‘Field Centre’, based in Clarkspring Woods on Westwood Side, was raided sometime between Thursday April 2 and Good Friday.

Many of the items stolen were donated by members of the public to the group or bought with fundraising money after the criminals gained access by slicing through security locks.

Most of the equipment is used on a weekly basis by the Volunteers, whose work focuses on maintaining and improving green spaces around Churwell.

It is thought that insurance may not cover all of the items taken, as some of them were lent or donated to the group rather than purchased.

One of the group’s members, Steve Hunter, said: “It is heartbreaking for the team that all the hard work raising fund to pay for such items had been to no avail, and will put back this year’s planned projects until many of the items are replaced.”
