World famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band in town

As part of the weekend’s remembrance services in Morley, Grimethorpe Colliery Band will be performing music to commemmorate both world wars at Morley Town Hall on Saturday.

The band gained international fame after featuring in the 1995 film Brassed Off and has since performed at a film festival in Norway, the 1998 World Cup and the Eurovision Song Contest. They will be performing the kind of music traditionally associated with the armed forces.

The night’s programme of music will feature the Charlie Chaplin song Smile, featuring a trombone solo by Chris Gomersall and remembrance tunes Lest we Forget and For the Fallen.

The show starts at 7.30pm and will also feature other brass band favourites

The band was formed in 1917 as a leisure activity for workmen at the colliery during their spare time.
