It was a Valentine’s celebration to remember for our competition winners Jane and Ronnie Durrans as they marked 42 years since the day they first met.

It was a Valentine’s celebration to remember for our competition winners Jane and Ronnie Durrans as they marked 42 years since the day they first met.

The couple, whose eyes met across a crowded room on Valentine’s Day in 1973, enjoyed a meal for two and stay at the Gomersal Park Hotel last weekend.

Jane, 67, of Adwalton Green, Drighlington, said: “It was wonderful. They couldn’t have done more for us at the hotel.

“We got a beautiful big suite with a sunken bath. They brought us a bottle of champagne on ice. The food was beautiful and the singer was fantastic. We’ll never forget it.”

And romantic runners-up Joan and Keith Field were treated to a Valentine’s Day meal for two at the Bangla Lounge in Birstall. The couple, of Wellcroft Grove, Tingley, were childhood friends and will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary in May.

Joan, 70, said: “Keith was surprised when we were chosen – we’re not usually lucky like that. We absolutely loved our evening. It was really nice.

We asked couples to tell us their love story in no more than 50 words.

Jane wrote: “Our eyes met across a crowded room on Valentine’s Day 1973. We married on May 12, 1973, and have been devoted to each other ever since. My heart still skips a beat when I hear his voice, recognise his footsteps or see his smile and I know he feels the same”

Joan wrote: “Keith and I met as children. In school we danced together when raining.

“Eventually went our separate ways, met up again later. Married in 1970 this year it will be our 45th anniversary.

“Have always worked hard together and laughed together. Always make up after arguing going to before sleep.”
