1777-Vermont becomes the first U.S. state to abolish slavery.
1937-Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the Pacific Ocean whilst attempting to make the first ever equatorial round-the-world-flight. She was pronounced dead on 5th January 1939.
2001-AbioMed developed the first artificial heart named AbioCor.
2002-Steve Fossett made a record for becoming the first person to fly solo around the world non-stop in a balloon.
