1868 - Inventor Christopher Latham Sholes is granted a patent for his invention of the typewriter. Sholes also invented "QWERTY" keyboard lettering system which is still used today.
1888 - Frederick Douglass is the first African-American to be nominated for President.
1958 - The Dutch Reformed Church accepts women ministers.
1973 - Arsonist, Peter Dinsdale, kills his first victim, six-year-old Richard Ellerington. Dinsdale admitted having murdered 26 people. It is unlikely that Dinsdale will ever be released from prison.
1991 - Famous computer game, Sonic the Hedgehog, is released in Europe and North America.
