1441 - Eton College was founded. Eton is a public school for boys which was founded by King Henry VI.
1901 - The first exhibition of Pablo Picasso's work opens.
1981 - The Humber Bridge in Yorkshire opens. The Humber Bridge is the world's fifth largest single-span suspension bridge.
1982 - A British plane flew through a volcanic ash cloud, causing all four engines to fail. The plane managed to glide out of the ash and the engines restarted. The plane then landed safely in Jakarta.
2004 - Capital punishment was declared unconstitutional in New York.
