ON one of the hottest days of the year Drighlington under 13s travelled to Hopton Mills hoping to continue on their winning ways from last week.
But losing the toss and having to field first in the baking sun, they knew winning was a long way away. Drig started well with Bailey opening the bowling again and taking a wicket in his second over, dismissing Sheard for eight. He continued with hi
s good swing bowling by also dismissing Townsend for just five and finished with figures of four overs, two wickets and only five runs conceded.
Farrar and Keyworth also bowled with good accuracy, going for just 11 runs in their eight combined overs. Unfortunately Marr and Fairhurst were not fully at their best and this showed with James Palmer hitting one six and four fours, but they both came back strong and Marr was able to create a confusion with the batter as captain Farrar picked up the ball and finally ended Lindley‘s innings for eight by running him out. Palmer finally retired on 30 before Fairhurst had the final word by bowling out Patel for 11. This left Drig chasing 87 for victory.
Their innings began poorly when the sharp bowling of Palmer cut Goodman’s innings short as he was hit on the hand and retired hurt. This brought Reilly to the crease, but both he and opener Wharf found batting difficult. The latter was bowled for none in the second over and the pressure was mounting.
Barker got off the mark, but was then clean bowled by Chidambara. Jones came and went for one, bowled by Stead, and Reilly was caught and bowled by Stead in his next over. Marr managed to clip the ball behind square leg and Keyworth hit the ball over mid off for one before he was then bowled by Chidambara.
This brought Farnell to the crease and he set out in positive manner, hitting a short ball for four. But he was then run out after confusion with the calling. Farrar came to the crease and managed to hit a quickfire 11 before being bowled out by Lindley.
Bailey came in with one thing on his mind - this was shown as he hit a glorious six over cover. Marr then managed to take his score on to 18 before Patel stumped Bailey after the batsman stayed out of his crease watching the umpire give him not out on a lbw appeal. He went for just seven and Marr soon followed for a well played 22.
Goodman decided to come back to the crease after nursing his hand injury, but the side needed 21 to win and they only managed one more run to Fairhurst as from the very next ball Goodman was bowled. This left Drig losing by 20 runs and going into their next league match next week against Scholes hoping to win away from home on their second attempt.
