Morley 15
Sheffield Tigers 14
ONCE again Morley left it desperately late to score the winning points against much-improved Tigers in a tense and exciting National Three North match at Scatcherd Lane.
As against Birkenhead Park, Morley had been fairly comfortably in control without converting pressure and possession into points.
As against Birkenhead, one slip, a rare missed tackle, allowed Sheffield's number 8 to go over to bring the score to 12-11. Fortunately for Morley, the normally reliable Sheffield kicker Charlie Spon-Smith failed with the difficult conversion.
Sensing victory, Sheffield camped in Morley's half. A moment of indecision saw Morley concede a penalty for holding on and Spon-Smith, on 62 minutes, gave Sheffield the lead they held until the 81st minute.
The pitch was heavy, but in a remarkably good condition considering the amount of rain. Morley are proving slow starters and this was no exception. It was nearly 10 minutes before they were in the Sheffield half, poor kicking and a surprising inability to win their own lineout contributed to early problems.
The third lost lineout was on Morley's five-metre line after one of many good kicks by Sheffield veteran stand-off, Dave Scully.
Although Sheffield took the Morley lineout, the home defence was up to the task, drove Sheffield backwards and forced a penalty. Chester's booming kick relieved the pressure and Morley at last began to put phases together.
Good anticipation by Chester allowed him time to collect a kick out of defence and set up man of the match Danny Chamberlain for a trademark burst down the middle.
The back row of Nutbeen and Hewetson were first in support, Sheffield infringed to prevent quick ball and Simon Bradshaw kicked the first of his five penalties.
However, lack of concentration promptly gave Tigers a penalty for not releasing and Spon-Smith levelled.
Morley became the better side. Joe Battye, from the base of the scrum, and Michael Ash at inside centre in particular causing problems.
Morley increased the tempo but they could not maintain continuity and gave away too much ball by aimless chipping over a well-organised defence.
A Bradshaw penalty kick drifted wide. However, he was then successful to give a 6-3 lead when a Sheffield forward was offside.
Minutes earlier a quick throw-in from Scott Evans was taken on by Chester and Sean Dadswell before Liam Frost cut through. He was tackled five metres short and Sheffield cleared.
Superb handling by Morley in close support nearly opened up Sheffield on the right but a deliberate knock-on stopped progress. Bradshaw missed the difficult touchline penalty.
However, Bradshaw put over an easier kick when the referee lost patience with Sheffield's indiscipline and gave a yellow card to prop Simon Bunting for repeated infringements and Morley led 9 -3.
Morley sought to take advantage and a good run by Evans led to a gap for right wing Chris Morgan. It looked impossible not to score with support on both sides and only one defender but the well-positioned referee judged his pass to Chamberlain forward.
There was another chance when a poor kick was well run back by Ash. His pass allowed Frost space on the left but his kick ahead was a touch too far and it remained 9-3 at the break.
Morley began the second half as they ended the first – on attack. The front row of Paul Gabriel, James Darbyshire and Alan Benn more than held their own against bigger opponents.
A long kick by Chester was superbly followed up by Bradshaw who forced the Sheffield full-back into touch.
However, Morley's lineout continued to splutter and the attacking opportunity was lost as Sheffield stole possession. Morley turned this into an opportunity as aggressive defending drove Sheffield back through several phases and they conceded a penalty in front of their posts. The ground was cutting up and Bradshaw did well to kick his fourth goal.
Sheffield then began a spirited fightback. For the first time their heavyweight pack caused problems in the scrum and Morley conceded a penalty which Spon-Smith landed. Soon after Bradshaw sent another kick wide.
Sheffield's first clear break occurred on 55 minutes when right wing Gareth Morley found space to run 50 metres before being tackled by Evans.
Sheffield attacked left and, although their passing to the right appeared no threat, their No. 8 Biff Pearson slipped a tackle, although Evans and Bradshaw tried hard to stop him, he went over near the right corner. Spon-Smith missed the conversion.
A penalty by Spon-Smith gave Sheffield the lead but he missed a chance to extend it as Sheffield were dominating. Astute kicking from Scully kept Morley in their own half but the Maroons kept coming back.
As the game edged out of normal time, Morley did not panic and began one last forward drive. With Chamberlain and Stannard at the heart of the maul and every forward giving his all, the muddied mass crawled slowly towards the line, even centre Frost added his energy.
Sheffield defended valiantly but at last a forward came in from the side and was penalised.
Up stepped Bradshaw for the pressure kick. Probably the calmest person in the ground, he made no mistake to give Morley the victory they deserved and worked hard very to achieve.
