DRIGHLINGTON CC under 13s played host to Mirfield on a wet Sunday morning and after a delayed start new captain Tom Farrar won the toss and elected to bowl first.
With the game reduced to 16 overs per side Drig opened the bowling with Bailey and Oliver who did well to restrict their opponents to 16-1. Keyworth and Farrar continued to bowl a good line until Zaman decided to hit out in the eighth over and dispat
ched Keyworth for a huge six over mid wicket then hit him over mid on for four. He took his score to 25 and retired. Marr and Warne came in to bowl and apart from two wides apiece they did not concede another run off their combined five overs. Marr was also able to remove Simpson for none by uprooting her leg stump.

The final two overs were completed by off spinner Fairhurst who only conceded four runs and captain Farrar who finished off the innings by bowling a maiden. The last delivery produced a run out after a good pick up and throw by Warne.

Drig had to chase a score of just 48 to win and made a solid start through the left hand, right hand combination of Fairhurst and Barker who did not score fast, but took the score to 22 off eight overs.

With Simpson only conceding one run off her first over the pressure increased and this caused Barker to hit out and he was caught out for eight. Goodman came in and hit two runs off his first ball. He then hit his next delivery towards the covers, but Bolt’s quick reactions and even better pick up and throw brought out about a run out.

Bailey was bowled out first ball by Simpson and Farrar came to the crease knowing that with only five overs and five balls remaining the home team needed quick runs, but two overs later he was bowled by Simpson for just two. Oliver came to the crease and with the nerves setting in he became the second to be run out after making just one. Keyworth came in with a spring in his step after playing for the senior team the day before and hit his first ball for a single, but in trying to hit his next ball out of the park he only succeeded in finding a fielder.

With Drig needing 10 runs to win off two-and-a-half overs Reilly managed to hit the first four in the home side’s innings and his next ball for a single. Fairhurst found a gap behind square leg for two and victory was completed in the next over thanks to two wides and a leg bye.

Drighlington won the game by four wickets and travel to Hopton Mills next Sunday in high spirits looking to progress into the next round of the cup.
