LEEDS Rhinos' appearance in this Saturday's Grand Final at Old Trafford is set to create problems for the region's top amateur rugby league sides with ties set to go ahead in the BARLA Yorkshire Cup on the same day.
Drighlington have been ordered to play their third round tie against Wibsey Warriors despite Grand Final day being traditionally one when all local fixtures are cancelled to enable players and spectators to make the trip for what is now the sport's biggest game.

Former Drighlington junior Lee Smith – if he comes through a disciplinary hearing – as well as the Morley-born Nick Scruton are set to play in the Old Trafford game as part of a Rhinos side looking to keep its hold on the Super League trophy.

BARLA will not move on the issue and insist the cup matches be played on the day. A 1pm kick-off has therefore been arranged by Drig for their tie against Methley Royals at the Battlefields so those wishing to attend the game at Old Trafford will have a fighting chance of getting there.

Hunslet Warriors are also involved in the Yorkshire Cup and could face player problems for their home tie against Dewsbury Moor. Drighlington A have no fixture, however, as all Pennine League games are off.

Drig's first team, meanwhile, had its own little piece of history last Saturday when father and son Mark and Michael Sanderson appeared in the same team.

Michael, 19, has become a regular starter in the last year and was joined by his 42-year-old father who came on as a second half substitute in the 30-18 win over Siddal A.

Mark is a real stalwart of the club and is a former Drig player-coach. He was back in the first team to help them out as a number of regulars were missing for the Pennine Premier Division match. Report on page 40
