DRIGHLINGTON finally managed to beat the weather and their Oldham hosts with an excellent display in Saturday's Challenge Cup preliminary round tie.
They produced some some outstanding play, especially in the first half as they blitzed the National Conference side to effectively wrap up the match in the first half- hour.

Drighlington scored five tries in the first quarter, silencing the home support with some scintillating football and crunching tackles which left Waterhead bewildered.

Tom Moorby grabbed the first try, finishing off a move in the corner.

Ryan Jackson pounced on a loose ball 20 metres out and followed up his kick-through to score a fine try.

Lee Mulhern grabbed a couple of scores from close range, showing the value of practiced moves.

Sam Pickles scooted over from acting-half deceiving a home defence who were waiting for the pass that never came.

The really heavy conditions made goalkicking tough and this showed as Michael Sanderson was just wide with each conversion attempt whereas on another day he would have far more success.

Waterhead managed to score a try on one of the rare occasions that they visited Drighlington half, the scrum half emulating Pickles's scoot to score at the posts with not a hand laid on him.

The response was immediate and from Drighlington's next possession quick passing released Moorby who ran 60 metres to outpace the defence for a try between the posts. Sanderson's successful conversion gave the Pennine League team a 26-6 half-time lead.

Substitutes John Gallagher, Liam Coughlan and Dave Paterson came on for Brearley, Jarrett and Mulhern after the break as Drighlington continued to dominate but the hosts stepped up the resistance and managed to thwart attacks with some last-ditch tackling.

It took another 20 minutes of play before Drighlington scored again when Coughlan followed up Jackson's deft kick through to score between the posts.

Sanderson landed another conversion and they wound down the clock to the end despite Waterhead grabbing a try in the corner in the final minute.

Forwards Brearley, Pickles, Jarrett, Mulhern, Pennington and Burton, assisted by Kilbride, ruled the day giving the backs time and space to work as Drighlington were worthy winners over the Conference Division Two side.
