Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 6

THE Hawks took advantage of the much-weakened side put out by their Super League visitors to gain a sound victory at South Leeds last Sunday.
Weakened or not, the young Wakefield side gave the Hawks the brisk workout they were seeking and it was only when one of the visitors' experienced hands, Jason Demetriou, was sin-binned for dissent that Hunslet took a firm grip and moved well clear.

Once again player-coach Paul March was among the leading players and he and centre David Clayton, who looks a useful signing, each scored two tries as the Hawks continued to sharpen their attacking play.

March again organised things in great style and his clever kick also produced a try for John Oakes in a lively contest.

Hunslet also had a player sin-binnned when Danny Grimshaw went off for 10 minutes for a late tackle but by then the match was safely wrapped up and the Hawks and their defence, which has clearly been worked on by March and his staff, conceded only one try.

Hunslet would also be pleased to see two of their Papua New Guinea trio, Nicko Slain and Charlie Wabo, going on as substitutes after their recent arrivals and the work-out should be of benefit to them.

The Hawks started well and only a handling error cost David March a first-minute score. Both sides made mistakes but Clayton showed good attacking know-how with two clinical finishes and a goal by Wayne McHugh put the Hawks 10-0 ahead.

The Wildcats came back with plenty of spirit and enterprise and the Hawks defence was stretched for a time but they held up well.

Then Demetriou departed and within three minutes Paul March had scored twice and just on the break gave Oakes his try chance and with McHugh adding the goals the Hawks had a comfortable 28-0 lead at the break.

The Wildcats cut the gap in the second half with a try by winger Gareth Potts, goaled by Cain Southernwood but Grimshaw's return helped ensure the Hawks had no other problems.

They eventually added to their tally with tries by young winger Corey Challenger and David March and another goal by McHugh.
