HEADINGLEY Carnegie Stadium will be the centre of a historic day of sport on Saturday, May 31 when a War of the Roses clash will take part on the rugby and cricket pitch at the same time.
Yorkshire County Cricket Club are taking on Lancashire in the LV County Championship from Friday 30th to Monday, June 2, with Saturday being the second day of four days of play. World Champions Leeds Rhinos have been drawn at home to Wigan Warriors i
n the Carnegie Challenge Cup quarter-final, which will be televised live on BBC1, kick-off 2.30pm.
The decision to play both games at the same time has come about due to a unique working partnership between Leeds Rugby and Yorkshire CCC, and following negotiations over the past 48 hours.
Yorkshire CCC Chief Executive Stewart Regan, commenting on the day, said "We are pleased to have reached an agreement with Leeds Rugby so that both teams can play at home on this occasion.
"The team has put measures in place to ensure YCCC play will not be disrupted on the day and existing arrangements for broadcasters, hospitality, car parking and changing rooms will not be affected.
"In recent years, the working relationship between both parties has grown stronger with innovations such as Headingley Carnegie Rewards which gives benefits to members of both clubs along with staff and students of Leeds Metropolitan University now in place.
"I am sure that by working together both organisations can continue to flourish in the years ahead."
Leeds Rugby chief executive Gary Hetherington echoed Stewart's comments: "We are obviously delighted to be playing at Headingley Carnegie in the quarter-final and we would like to thank Yorkshire CCC for their co-operation in helping us to stage the game at the same time as their important fixture against Lancashire.
"We all know how special and unique Headingley Carnegie is and days like this go to prove how true that is. There will be logistical challenges that we will need to overcome but the important issue is that there is a willingness from all parties to make both matches a success and that all visitors to Headingley Carnegie on 31st May enjoy their day with us."
