GILDERSOME under 15s enjoyed a big victory over East Ardsley under 15s in a local derby in round one of the Marsdin Trophy.
The victory was based on a terrific effort in the field which saw East Ardsley dismissed for only 38. Lee, with 3-1, was the pick of the Gildersome bowlers.
In reply, Gildersome had few problems reaching their target with eight wickets to spare as
Richardson (18 no) top scored.
Morley under 15s were unlucky to lose to Carlton after the teams finished with equal scores. Visitors Carlton batted first and posted a score of 93-5 with Matthew Parker taking 2-16 and Alex Hough 2-21. Morley’s response included 22 from Alex Hough while James McNichol retired unbeaten on 35. In a tense finish, the home side got up to their opponents’ score, but in ending on 93-6 Morley went out of the cup on the basis of wickets to fall.
Birstall under 15s also crashed out as they lost away to Brighouse Trojans. They were restricted to 63-8 after the Trojans had made a big 117-7 total with Lawson (28) top scoring.
Adwalton under 15s could only make 39-9 as they lost their first round match at Liversedge. They were replying to the hosts’ 133-4 which had included contributions of 36 from Hardcastle and 27 not out by Gibson.
Hunslet Nelson under 15s came close to winning a thrilling run chase in their tie at home to Wrenthorpe. The visitors batted superbly to make 97-0, but Nelson kept up with the required rate in their reply as Rayit retired with 35 and Seddon hit 27. However, their hopes were dashed in the final over when Jennings pulled off three stumpings and a catch to clinch the game for Wrenthorpe, Hunslet finishing on 91-6.
Woodkirk under 15s did make it through when they beat Hanging Heaton by 13 runs. Batting first, Woodkirk made 93-4 as Johnson hit 30 and Claughton retired on 35. In reply, Heaton were kept to 80-8.
Draw for round two of the U15 Marsdin Cup (to be played on Tuesday, May 20): Brighouse Trojans v Wakefield Thornes; Scholes v Wakefield St Michael’s; Wrenthorpe v Townville; Carlton v Woodkirk; Azaad v Gildersome; Brighouse Spartans v Gomersal; Liversedge v Mirfield. Bye: New Farnley.
Gildersome under 15s put up a good all-round display to edge out Moorlands in their first Gordon S Cooper Championship match of the season.
All the players contributed as they kept Moorlands to 61-7 in the B Section game then reached their target with two wickets to spare despite a 3-3 spell from Qureshi.
Morley under 15s switched their intended away game against Wakefield St Michael’s to Scatcherd Lane as their opponents’ ground was waterlogged, but they suffered an eight wicket C Section defeat.
After going in first, Morley scored 75-7. James McNichol retired on 36 and he was well supported by Jamie Denison with 17 not out. Wakefield reached their target in the 17th over although under 13 Declan Chisholm produced a great spell, finishing with 1-5 off his three overs. Debutant Alex Hough took the other wicket.
