MORLEY had a double bonus before facing Spen Victoria in their second Division Two game of the new season in the JCT600 Bradford League.
The batting was strengthened with the inclusion of Chris Taylor who received permission from Yorkshire to make his Morley debut and the bowling was further strengthened following the early arrival of overseas player Mohammad Azarullah. The latter was not due to arrive in this country for another week after playing for the Pakistan Academy side against Bangladesh so it was surprised members who saw him line-up in Morley colours for the first time - and they were not disappointed with his display.

The other key performer was one of Morley's more well known faces as Adam Larkin played the innings of the day in what turned out to be a 75-run home victory.

Morley took first knock and on a slow wicket struggled to get the ball off the square in the early stages. Spen's opening attack of Imran Amin and Robert Warriner was accurate and even county player Taylor found it hard going before he was eventually out for eight, lbw to first change bowler Adam Brown with the score on 29. After 20 overs Morley had only reached 35-2 and their efforts at improving the scoring rate were not helped when captain Matt Taylor was then run out for two.

When David Nebard followed for eight and Michael Davies for 14 they were 86-5, but Larkin was still there and he began to open up towards the end of the innings. Together with Michael Cooper (14 not out), who used his speed between the wickets well, he put on 59 and the home side eventually reached 145-5 from their 50 overs with Larkin not out on 81.

During the innings one of the club's committee men said "don't forget about our brilliant bowlers" and how right as he was as Spen's batsmen found it even more of a struggle. Although Spen made a lively start, they were soon in trouble against the pace bowling of Azarullah who took 5-40, four of his victims being clean bowled. Fine support came from another of Morley's new boys, Rob Lintin-French, who claimed 3-7, and the visitors were all out for 70.

There was no double celebration for Morley as they crashed out of the Heavy Woollen Cup in unlucky circumstances on Sunday. It started raining 15 minutes before the start of the home tie with Rockingham Colliery and never stopped. Things were settled by a bowl out which was won by the visitors 2-0.

Morley Seconds were in winning form on Saturday as they pulled off an exciting four-run win at Idle.

Batting first, Morley struggled to 118 all out with Gavin Goodlad top scoring on 36 and Ash Daly batting well for his 19. The highlight, though, was an invaluable 22 from young Jack Seddon, which at least gave the bowlers something to defend.

Defend it they did too, with Eddie Ream back to his best, taking a match winning 6-48, Richard Winn getting 3-7 and Spenser Horsfall picking up the remaining wicket for just 17 runs. Mention must be made of skipper Andrew Cutt who held on to a difficult catch in the slips to dismiss the last Idle batsman and secure his team a memorable win.
