WITH the League One promotion bid back on track via a fine win over Colchester, Leeds United return to the FA Cup tonight in the fourth round replay against Premier League Tottenham at Elland Road.
Having done so well to draw at White Hart Lane, on the back of the memorable win over Manchester United in the previous round, it is asking a lot for a third night of glory, but the Whites are sure to give it their best shot in front of a full house.
Last week's signings, Max Gradel, Gary McSheffrey and Shane Lowry are unavailable to play, having signed after the original Tottenham tie took place, but Leeds are expected to field their strongest possible line-up as they continue to take the competition seriously despite its obvious danger of damaging promotion prospects.
Defender Patrick Kisnorbo and midfielder Neil Kilkenny, who missed Saturday's game with injuries, are back in contention and manager Simon Grayson hopes to have Andrew Hughes at left-back after he was too ill to play against Colchester.
Grayson may opt to go with the same 4-4-1-1 formation adopted in the first game with Spurs, which would mean striker Luciano Becchio dropping back out but Spurs will be kept guessing as Leeds have never gone into a home game without at least two out-and-out forwards since the current manager took over.
United certainly go into the tie with confidence restored after they ended a run of five games without a win in beating Colchester 2-0 with a goal in each half from Jermaine Beckford.
They remain three points behind leaders Norwich but forged four points ahead of third-placed Charlton and have two games in hand. With a string of games against mid-table sides to come, Leeds will look to stretch that advantage in the next month to give them breathing space for the run-in when the team still has to go to Norwich and Charlton.
On Saturday a trip to Hartlepool is next up in League One and for this and the Tottenham game the manager will demand more of the excellent attitude and determination shown to defeat a physical Colchester side.
"We defended really well as a team. We looked very hard to beat and were resilient, restricting them to very few chances," said Grayson.
"I expected that reaction because the players were disappointed and wounded by the defeat at Swindon in midweek."
Grayson added: "We will go into the replay still as underdogs, but with nothing to lose."
Leeds round off a busy seven days next Tuesday when they attempt to reach Wembley and play the return leg against Carlisle in the northern area final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
Kick-off is an unusually early 7pm the game has been chosen for live coverage on Sky Sports.
After losing the first leg 2-1 at Elland Road the Whites have a tricky task to turn the tie around, especially when considering they have failed to beat Carlisle three times at home in the past year. They can though draw inspiration from a 2-0 win at Brunton Park in the second leg of the play-offs two seasons ago – after they lost the first 2-1.
