DRIGHLINGTON under 11s made the trip to Scarborough to play in the International Rugby festival and it turned out to be a highly successful outing.
They were due to play four teams from across the north, including Mayfield Mustangs A and B from Rochdale, Shevington Sharks (Wigan) and Scarborough. Unfortunately, a last minute withdrawal from Scarborough meant that Drig were the only Yorkshire representatives at their age group.
They started the tournament with a match against Shevington Sharks and this set the tone for the day. The Sharks had great field position and following a spate of penalties, had repeat sets of six on the Drig line, but dogged and determined tackling kept them out. This gave Drig the confidence they needed and they went on to play some champagne rugby league full of deft hand-offs, tricky side stepping and superb long range passes.
The games against the Mustangs teams followed the same pattern. Although Drig sparkled in attack, what stood out most was their heroics in defence. Both teams struggled to score points and Drig finished Saturday unbeaten in all games.
The Sunday fixtures were a repeat of the previous day, but clearly all the teams were now aware of Drig's potential and stepped up to the challenge. Shevington looked a different side and forced Drig on to the backfoot, but could not outscore the Tigers and the game finished a draw.
Drig eased past Mayfield B and had only one more game in which to remain undefeated. Mayfield A played really well, but Drig's awesome defence kept them out. Drig scored an interception try at the death and left the tournament the only unbeaten side.
The under 11s were in action against Stanningley who got off to a flyer, scoring in the second minute. Drig were forced to withstand some heavy pressure in the early stages, this was relieved when Marc Willis burst down the right and offloaded a perfect pass to Kieran Boulton who touched down unopposed under the posts.
Stanningley burst back immediately to regain the lead, but Drig continued to play some impressive rugby and reaped their rewards when Willis touched down. Stanningley, however scored the final try of the half to give them a two point lead.
The second half was a tense affair until full back Kieron Roche collected a kick on his own goal line and burst down the left wing to score a great try for Drig. Stanningley showed great resilience by touching down in the first set of six from the restart and looked to have the game sewn up when they crossed again with five minutes remaining.
Drig kept their composure and marched down the field, led by strong running from the forwards, to set up a Liam Wright short range try to give an exciting finale to the game. Strong Drig defence gave them one last opportunity to attack which they made the most of. A superb kick to the corner by skipper Kieran Boulton was picked up by Roche who darted over to seal the win.
Drig awarded their 100% effort prize to Will Hemmingway-Copley who made an impressive debut, while Declan Brererton won top tackler for his personal tally of 14 tackles.
