AFTER the sea air appeared to do Yorkshire a power of good in their NatWest Pro 40 League game against Kent on Monday, they will be hoping for a little more Scarborough magic to rub off on the team as they return to County Championship action today (Wednesday).
Again the White Rose men are up against Kent and there is much at stake in an amazing first division in which just about every team can still finish in the top three or the bottom three.
Kent themselves climbed out of the relegation places with vi
ctory over Lancashire at the weekend and shot up to fourth place and this can be used to inspire Yorkshire who are 10 points above bottom placed Surrey, but still only 30 behind leaders Somerset. What is against the Tykes, however, is the fact that for one reason or another they have not won a four-day game since early June.
In the Pro40 League they have met with more success and made it three wins from five matches when they beat Kent by seven wickets.
In a much improved bowling display from the one in an exciting tied game at Derbyshire last Thursday, they managed to restrict the visitors to 189-9 with Richard Pyrah taking 4-35 from his eight overs.
Yorkshire then knocked off the runs without undue alarm as Anthony McGrath played one of his best one-day innings of the year in making an unbeaten 85 and got good support from Jacques Rudolph (41) and Gerard Brophy with 38 not out.
After they threw away what seemed a certain win at Derby it was a much better effort that lifted the Tykes level with Kent in second place in Division Two. Three more wins in this competition will see them earn promotion and they will be looking for one of them at Scarborough again on Sunday when Glamorgan are the visitors.
