Hawks add six signatures to new-look squad
Tom Bush
HUNSLET Hawks have re-signed three of the current squad and moved for another trio as they continue to build for next season.
Props Anthony Henderson and Steve Lewis along with centre Liam Welham have penned new deals which will keep them at South Leeds for 2013 as the Hunslet squad continues to take shape.
Henderson is a very big direct strong running prop with power and pace and although his season has been hampered by niggling injuries this was to be expected after a knee reconstruction.
Lewis has had a consistent year and has made the transition from backs to forwards well and should improve further as, while his mobility is a real asset as well as his ability to cover various positions.
Welham had a nightmare start to his Hunslet debut season being ruled out for two thirds of the campaign following an knee operation in January.
He returned to fitness in time to play the final few matches of the season and gave the centre position a real boost, proving that Hunslet have quality in the three quarters.
Coach Barry Eaton said: “All three players have proved their worth to the club this season and all three are still at a young age and will improve further in the next 12 months.
“We are all really excited about the club’s prospects in 2013 with the players we have already on board and the possibilities of more new faces joining soon.”
Hunslet have also signed former Rhinos academy star Tom Bush, a 22-year-old full-back who can also cover wing and is a reliable goal kicker, and Aston Wilson - the son of former Hunslet star Warren Wilson who played for the club from 1985-89.
Bush has signed a one-year contract having spent the last two seasons with fellow Co-operative Championship side York City Knights.
Wilson, 21, is also on a 12-month contract and comes to the Hawks via Leeds Rhinos, Dewsbury and Castleford Tigers prior to taking a spell out of the game.
And also muscling in on Eaton’s ‘six pack’ is Wakefield Wildcats’ goalkicking reserve team half-back Danny Ansell, the Hunslet coach’s nephew who comes to the South Leeds Stadium with a Super League work ethic and the skills that could help him force his way into first-team contention in 2013.
