Morley RFC eased into pre-season friendlies when a group of players agreed to play in the Roundhegians 10-a-side festival at the weekend.
Captained by Mark Chester, the team finished equal top in the group stages with victories over Wetherby, Leeds Becket A, West Park Leeds and a narrow defeat to Harrogate Pythons. But in the semi-final they lost to Leeds Beckett B.
Chester said: “It was a useful run out where we could blend in some of the new boys who have joined us this season.
Tim Pickersgill, Josh Bird, Ollie Stanford, Callum Rogers and Chris Lound all had a good run out. It was good a good session to get to know some of the others (Tom Richmond, Richard Knowles, Declan Brereton, Simon Hirst, Kerry Wood and Henry Shiell) under match conditions. Thanks to all the friends and family who came to support us on a great day of rugby.”
Morley step up a gear with the first pre-season match proper this Saturday when they have fixed up a home match with Leeds Beckett University on Saturday August.
Kick-off will be 3pm and Morley will be looking to give all their players a run out.
Morley’s originally arranged pre-season match with Bowden was cancelled after Bowden contacted the club. They had played Stoke last Saturday and seven players sustained injuries. Add these to the four players already unavailable and Bowden had reluctantly had to cancel the match.
Quick work by the coaches allowed them to fill the gap with the match against Leeds Beckett which had been planned for August 26.
The Maroons begin their National Three North League season on Saturday, September 2 at home Lymm.
