Featherstone Rovers survived an opening night scare to beat plucky Hunslet Hawks 28-14 at Wakefield’s Rapid Solicitor’s Stadium on Monday.

Newly-promoted Hunslet threatened a major upset when they led 8-6 at half-time and were 14-12 ahead in the second-half but Rovers got their act together in the last 20 minutes.

Paul Sykes scored a lovely solo try and Ben Blackmore bagged two touchdowns as Featherstone finished on top.

Ian Hardman and Jack Bussey were Featherstone’s other try scorers.

Hunslet’s line-up included eight former Featherstone players including their new captain Andy Kain who was a big threat to his old club.

Callum Casey scored Hunslet’s first try after Kain made a 75-yard interception and Liam Mackay grabbed their second with Simon Brown kicking three goals.

Featherstone’’s Tim Spears was sin-binned in the first-half.
