Fiction fans are invited to meet an author who has put experiences of teaching around Kirklees into her debut novel.
Joyce Worsford, who taught in Kirklees and Leeds schools, will drop into Birstall Library to discuss the book, A Fistful of Marigolds, from 7.30pm to 9pm on Wednesday September 17.
It is set at the beginning of a new term in 1973 and focuses on an unmarried, overworked inner-city primary school teacher called Kathy Johnson.
Included are tales of a boy obsessed with Beethoven, a girl who finds hope through a love of flowers, a fire, poverty and comical trips to the seaside.
Author Gervase Phinn, who was also a teacher and a schools inspector, said: “If you enjoy a warm-hearted, life-affirming and penetrating read then A Fistful of Marigolds is for you.
“Written in a lively, accessible and entertaining style, the story captures the joys, misfortunes, the pleasures and the heartbreaks of an inspirational teacher who clearly loved her work with children.”
Entry is £2 and includes refreshments.
