Morley’s new Women’s Institute committee is now up and running and busy preparing for its first members’ meeting next month.
The committee has organised its first official meeting for September 8 at 7.30pm at Morley Town Hall.
They will be joined by the national federation of the WI who will give an informative presentation about the institute before an official welcome from the new committee.
They will then be offering cakes and bakes .
The committee includes: President Rachael Kennedy, vice president Janine Smith secretary Wendy Maynard-Light, treasurer Rachel Dalby and committee members Susie Light, Amy Bedford and Gail Wood.
Rachael said: “I plan to take this new WI forward with passion and enthusiasm, whilst maintaining the ethos and philosophy of the WI, by offering a variety of events, activities and more for all ladies in Morley.”
Rachael said that they are keen to ensure the town’s new WI will be fun, vibrant and empowering to all women and will offer talks, workshops, campaigns and engaging activities for ladies of Morley aged 18 – 80.
Initially formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during World War One, the organisation’s aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK.
The WI celebrates its centenary this year and currently has 212,000 members in around 6,600 WIs.
Meetings are planned to take place on every second Tuesday of the month.
