An Iranian family who are believed to have spent 11 days in the back of a wagon have been found wandering down the hard shoulder of the M621 near Morley.

Police were initially called to reports that a group of people were walking along the motorway towards junction 27 near Morley just after 2pm on Saturday.

On arrival officers found a family of three, which included a couple and a malnourished six-year-old girl.

The family explained that they had spent around a week and a half in the back of a wagon in a bid to claim asylum in the UK.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed that the family were transported to Leeds General Infirmary for medical attention after officers alerted UK immigration authorities of the case.

Officers from the force’s Road Policing Unit tweeted: “Now all safe and being looked after. Social services and immigration authorities made aware.”
