People are being warned of wind speeds of up to 70mph later today (Thursday) and tomorrow as two storms sweep in from the Atlantic.

Forecasters said the gales are expected to hit northern parts of the UK this evening.

Although Scotland is expected to see the worst of the weather, the Met Office said wind speeds in West Yorkshire could still hit 70mph.

Mark Wilson, from the Met Office, said: “Our best advice is to be aware of the strong winds and to check our weather warnings.

“It could have an impact on transport and services and cause structural damage.”

Conditions are expected to deteriorate significantly later today and into tomorrow.

Another vicious storm is being forecast from tomorrow into Saturday.

A spokesman for The Highways Agency said: “Road users are advised to plan for their journey before they set out, to allow plenty of extra time if travel conditions are poor or to consider delaying their journey if the weather becomes severe.”
