Hand-knitted poppies to support annual appeal

Poppies are blooming at Tingley’s Syke Fish and Chip Shop in support of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

Shop owner Caroline Spillane has created hand-knitted and crochet poppy products to commemorate soldiers of today and yesteryear.

She said: “We have tried to include poppy designs and products for everyone. There are the traditional brooches but I have made hair clips and bobbles, keyrings and book marks. We even have some tie clips for the gentlemen.”

Last year the generosity of Syke’s customers helped raise nearly £230 towards the appeal, helping the Royal British legion provide thousands of veterans, service men and women, and their families with vital advice and support.

Chris Newman, Poppy Appeal area organiser for the Legion, said: “We have always enjoyed a great deal of support for the appeal from local businesses and it is always positive when supporters find ways of reaching even more people.”

The poppies will be available, alongside the traditional ones, in the shop from the weekend. The Gift Shop on Syke Road is also stocking a selection of the poppies. It is open from 11.00am until 5.00pm daily.
