Villagers have been left ‘appalled’ after vandals destroyed an exhibit advertising this weekend’s annual scarecrow festival.
The hay-made exhibit sat at the crossroads leading into Gildersome from Gelderd Road, there as an invite for passers-by to visit this Sunday’s popular event.
Gildersome parish councillor Pay May said: “All we know is that it happened after 11pm on Monday night.
“It must have taken some strength to dislodge it all as the bales had been well and truly secured.
“It took members of the parish council over two hours to construct and we were so pleased with it. Obviously we, and much of the village, are upset and appalled by this needless act of vandalism.
“We would like to say thank you to all the people who offered to rebuild it, but considering the amount of work and the short time before the festival on Sunday, we decided not do so.
“It will however be there next year!”
The festival will be held from 10am-6pm throughout the village with route maps showing where the many scarecrows are placed will be available from the Meeting Hall on Town Street.
