Morley has become the first town in Yorkshire to get free wifi in its town centre, in a move which is expected to boost businesses on the High Street.

The scheme has previously been rolled out in large city centres across the UK, but Morley is one of the first towns of its size in the country to be included.

Ed Balls said: “This is fantastic news. We know that Morley is already a great place to shop but free wifi will be a great boost for the town centre and will support our efforts to bring more shoppers into our town to support local businesses.”

Shoppers who use the wifi once will be automatically connected once they re-enter the hotspot zone without the need for a password. It is openly available to people from all mobile phone networks.

Morley Chamber President Lee Jagger said: “Morley already offered something different to other towns because of the variety of independent shops and restaurants, all in the Shadow of our magnificent Town Hall. But now people will have even more reason to come into Morley and shop locally. We’re grateful to O2 for supporting businesses in the town in this way.”
