Shops and businesses will be opening late next week for the town’s Christmas lights switch on in a bid to boost the town centre.

Disney characters Princess Elsa and Princess Anna will join Mayor of Morley Coun Wyn Kidger in the annual switch-on next Thursday November 20 with a larger than usual turnout expected for 2014.

The ceremony is the highlight of a fun-packed programme of attractions on the evening, with a street festival and stage show preceding the switch-on at 7pm.

Town events manager Rachael Kennedy said: “There should be a really good atmosphere. We’re delighted that Princess Elsa and Princess Anna will be joining us for the switch-on and this will attract a big crowd and especially young families.

“We’ve also moved the stage towards where Yorkshire Building Society is as this will give us more space to accommodate everyone.”

The fun starts at 5pm with the street festival in the centre of town, with funfair rides and food and drink competitions on the agenda, before the stage show starts at 5.30pm.

Among the acts performing on stage are local girl band Against Habit, award-winning dance group Phoenix Dance and heavy metal rock band Ultimate Thunder. Talented singer Steve Long, who specialises in melodies from the 1960s, will lead the proceedings as compère.

With a firework display lighting the skies after the evening’s main event, many of the town’s businesses will remain open during the evening to take advantage of the large congregation in the town centre.

Mrs Kennedy said: “A lot of the shops will be staying open late offering discounts, which will be good for those attending.”
