A Morley teenager has completed her Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award through Girlguiding.

Lucy Thomas, 17, a member of Morley District Rangers, worked on her award for over a year taking her time to complete all the challenges and sections to the best of her ability.

The award has four sections: volunteering, physical, skill and expedition.

Lucy completed her award by volunteering with 2nd Churwell Guides, progressing her passion for karate, learning to drive and embarking on a hiking and camping expedition with other guiding members from Girlguiding Leeds.

She said: “I really enjoyed working on my award and I am so pleased to have completed it.

“Learning to drive has given me a sense of independence and given me a skill I will use for several years to come. I developed my confidence in speaking in front of people and being able to explain instructions to girls younger than myself by volunteering within guiding.”

“I loved working on my belts in karate and it was great to be able to put them towards my Duke of Edinburgh Award and my expedition was certainly a challenge as I didn’t know the other girls before we went.

“I want to say thank you to all the leaders and instructors who helped and gave me support along the way.”

Claire McLennan, leader Morley District Rangers, said: “Lucy has worked incredibly hard on this award - even more so than one might think as she worked by herself in putting together her plan and completing the different sections.

“No-one else in the group was working on the award at the same time. It may have been a solo effort in piecing her ideas together but as a result she has developed how to push herself, manage her time and to collaborate with others when needed to work as a team to complete the group expedition.

“An extra congratulations goes out to Lucy as she is the first member of Morley District Rangers to achieve a Duke of Edinburgh Award – well done!”
