A working men’s club which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year is marking its centenary with a series of new events.

And Churwell WMC is kicking off its year of fun with something a bit different – a burlesque evening featuring male and female performers.

The event, which takes place tonight, is being organised by Angela Gilmartin, a club regular who says although she doesn’t work there, she wants to help support the club and get the community involved.

She said the event will feature four performers from London: Gracie, a jazz singer and compere; gymnast, acrobat and comedian Abigail Collins, who performs a hula hoop act; male burlesque dancer and singer Dave the Bear and female burlesque dancer Cherry Shakewell, who performs all over the world.

Angela said: “The club is 100 years old and there needs to be an element of change and something different.

“The most adventurous thing the club has done is a male stripper show, and that went down really well.

“All the men were saying there was nothing for them so this is something that will suit men and women. There’s a bit of something to suit everybody.”

Angela said people often thought burlesque was seedy, but she said it was “tasteful tease, which isn’t about stripping” – and was part of a plan to bring something new to the club.

She said: “A lot of people think clubs are just about bingo – there is a stigma attached to them, but there shouldn’t be. They are not just for men, they are for families too.

“There are generations coming into our club – children come in with their great-grandparents.

“Where else would you get that?”

The event starts at 7pm. Tickets are £10 on the door or available from the club in Old Road, or from
