Worshippers at Morley Community Church welcomed a special guest to their harvest festival when local MP Andrea Jenkyns joined them.
Miss Jenkyns was greeted by an impressive display of fruit and vegetables prepared by the congregation when she arrived at the Fountain Street mission chapel. During her visit, she learned about the church’s Harvest Egg project, which is raising funds to help miners’ widows in Zimbabwe by selling free-range eggs to purchase chickens the women can rear.
The VIP visitor then judged the youth club’s harvest vegetable monster competition, and admired youngsters’ creations made from leeks, broccoli, marrow and aubergines.
“Harvest is a time to pause and be thankful for the abundance we enjoy in this country. This harvest festival service was enjoyed by all,” said church pastor the Rev Captain Stephen Wright.
Miss Jenkyns received an illustrated book about the Houses of Parliament as a gift from the church to celebrate her election and as a memento of her visit.
