THE new headteacher of Thorpe Primary School has a vision: that the children in his school make every second count.

Simon McCarthy took over the head role in September after the retirement of Edwina Kus in July, and says he is enjoying every minute.

“I absolutely love it, “ he said. “It’s a brilliant place to be.”

Mr McCarthy left his deputy headteacher role at Snapethorpe School in his hometown of Wakefield to take a step-up the ladder and hopes to continue the work of his predecessor.

He said: “The vision of the school is to make every second that the children are here count.

“Everything is based on learning to equip our children with the skills they need to secure a good job in the future.

“Our motto is that you have one chance and we are that one chance.

“We will bend over backwards and do whatever it takes to make sure our children are the best that they can be. I am very passionate about that.”

In the school’s latest Ofsted inspection it was described as ‘good’ which is something Mr McCarthy aims to improve even further.

He said: “The school was doing really well before and we now need to build on that and continue that journey to outstanding.”
