Tingley could soon be welcoming a new Tesco store on the site of a former pub.
Tesco Stores Ltd have applied to Leeds City Council’s planning department to open on the former Smithy public house on Westerton Road.
The application says there will be ‘no requirement for any further building works or demolition’ and shop fronts have been proposed for the existing pub.
An application for a single storey extension, fencing and alterations to the car park have already been approved by planning chiefs.
There are also applications under consideration for security bollards to the shop front, an ATM cash machine and lighting to the car park.
One objection to the proposal has already been made to the planning department, saying: “I object strongly to this proposal and also to the associated submissions for this proposed development.
“The area has been subjected to excessive new housing recently and whilst there is plenty of shopping provision, there is only one alternative public house in the nearby vicinity.
“The Smithy Public House, which is a community ‘local’ should remain as such. A much need amenity.”
