AN AMATEUR artist from Tingley is lending her skills with paintbrush and pens to a project to encourage people in Churwell to use and appreciate their local woods.

Dilys Hetherington, 52, is painting a map and guide to Daffil and Clark Spring Woods for Churwell Action Group’s environmental volunteers.

Dilys, who lives near Asda, said she was asked to do the map by her friend, Morley town councillor Janet Harrison but the real inspiration came from all the volunteers who have been working so hard to transform the wood into something beautiful that can be used by the whole community.

She added: I have been an enthusiastic amateur artist for a long time and last year I thought I would treat myself to a foundation course at Wakefield Tech as a retirement present to
myself.

“It has been an absolute inspiration and I have really enjoyed being on the course with young people and improving my skills.

“Hopefully the map will inspire people to go and have a look at the woods because the volunteers have done some marvellous work.”

When finished the map will either be installed at the entrance to the woods or will be used on leaflets that will be distributed
locally.
